Our highlight this past week was our two day trip to Eastern Visayas. We took a flight there (the ride to the airport, which took two hours, was longer than the flight there) and hit the ground running. Kenneth Lee came with us as we headed off to talk to four school divisions about our literacy projects. Luckily, we were able to connect with two different church leaders who also happen to work in their school divisions, so we had a connection to get us in to the superintendents and other curriculum people. We started by flying into Catarman in Northern Samar and were driven for six hours to get to Tacloban for the Leyte and Tacloban school divisions. We had to visit with Ormoc online, since it would have taken too long to drive there and back and still get to the airport. It was energizing to visit with all of these divisions- because they were so excited about this program and wanting to get started right away. Northern Samar and Leyte both have very large divisions- one of them has over 1200 schools! They wanted to do all of their elementary schools, but that isn’t possible, so we settled on 200 schools for each of them. Even that is going to be pushing it, but we think we can do it! Leyte was much nicer than I thought it would be – wide streets, close to the ocean and the MacCarthur monument was really well laid out and very moving. We look forward to returning in a month or so to roll out the Peer to Peer Literacy Projects with all of them!
